Falling shrapnel from an intercepted missile killed a Pakistani national in Abu Dhabi, the government media office said Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the Bani Yas area “following the interception of a ballistic missile by air defences,” the Abu Dhabi Media Office said in a post on X.

The victim was identified as a Pakistani national, the office added.

Air defense forces repelling incoming missiles

Meanwhile, authorities said the country’s air defense systems are continuing to intercept incoming missiles and drones launched from Iran.

Earlier Tuesday, the state news agency WAM reported that the United Arab Emirates’ General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced the resumption of air traffic in the country’s airspace after a temporary full closure.

The authority said the decision was taken after the situation stabilized and following a comprehensive assessment of operational and security conditions in coordination with relevant authorities.

Real-time monitoring remains in place to ensure the highest level of air navigation safety, the GCAA said.

It also thanked passengers and airlines for their cooperation and said its teams remain fully prepared to respond to any developments.

The reopening followed a full closure of the country’s airspace, described by officials as an “exceptional precautionary measure” to ensure the safety of flights, crews and national territory after the Ministry of Defense reported responding to incoming missile and drone threats from Iran.

The developments come as regional tensions have escalated since Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28.

The strikes have killed more than 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian authorities.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
