Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the fight against the Daesh terrorist group is growing stronger and more determined, with efforts underway to eradicate the roots of terrorism across the region.
“Once the separatist terrorist threat in northern Syria is completely eliminated, not only the Syrian people but the entire region will find relief,” Erdogan said at a key-delivery ceremony for newly built houses in Türkiye’s Aydin province.
He said a unified, secure and stable Syria would benefit all of the country’s communities.
“The winners of a united, whole and secure Syria will be Arabs, Turkmens, Kurds, Alawites, Druze, Christians and all other Syrian citizens,” Erdogan said.
Referring to global politics, Erdogan said discussions at this week’s World Economic Forum in Davos show that Türkiye’s long-standing criticism of the global system is increasingly resonating in Western countries.
Meanwhile, Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib said life is gradually returning to normal in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo after the YPG/SDF terrorist group was driven out.
The SDF is dominated by the YPG, which Türkiye considers the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist group.
On Jan. 10, the Syrian Army expelled SDF forces from the two neighborhoods, liberating areas west and east of the Euphrates River that had been under SDF control.
In a statement published Friday evening by the Syrian Arab News Agency, or SANA, al-Gharib said the end of the emergency humanitarian response phase and the full return of security and stability have allowed daily life to resume.
“The rate of residents’ return has exceeded 90%,” he said.
Gharib also announced the reopening of the Ashrafieh Post Office to provide postal and civil registry services.
In the transport sector, three public transport lines have been activated to facilitate movement, while roads previously closed with earthen or concrete barriers have been reopened, easing traffic flow and access to neighborhoods.
He said about 80% of the electricity network has been rehabilitated and maintained, with power lines gradually being restored, improving living conditions for residents.
In education, Gharib said work is underway to rehabilitate 10 schools that are set to resume service at the start of the second academic term, allowing students to return to classrooms in a safe environment.
On Tuesday, the Syrian presidency announced reaching a “mutual understanding” with the SDF that includes broad military, administrative and political integration mechanisms, with implementation beginning the same evening.
The understanding followed a military operation launched days earlier by the Syrian Army, during which it regained large areas in eastern and northeastern Syria.
