Intense fighting broke out in northern Syria's Aleppo city between Syrian security forces and the PKK/YPG terror organization operating under the name SDG, according to local reports.

Members of the PKK/YPG launched attacks on Syrian security forces using heavy weapons in Aleppo's central Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, while targeting the area around Rahman Mosque in the Syriac neighborhood with mortar fire.

Security forces responded to the assaults, with clashes continuing intermittently across the affected areas. The confrontations highlight ongoing tensions in Syria's complex security landscape, where various armed groups continue to operate despite years of conflict.

Security measures heightened as violence escalates

In response to the violence, security units increased safety measures around the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods during evening hours as authorities sought to contain the escalating situation.

The latest incidents follow previous clashes that occurred the night before, when PKK/YPG forces attacked Syrian security personnel in the Deir Hafir region, located east of Aleppo city center. Those confrontations also resulted in fighting between the opposing sides.

Background of ongoing regional tensions

The PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has maintained a presence in northern Syria through its Syrian affiliate YPG. The group has been involved in Syria's protracted civil war, which began in 2011 and has drawn in multiple regional and international actors.

Aleppo, once Syria's commercial hub and largest city, has been a focal point of conflict throughout the war, changing hands multiple times before Syrian government forces regained control of the city in 2016.
