France condemned Israel’s recent cross-border strike in Syria on Sunday, which killed 13 civilians, including women and children, and called on Israeli authorities to adhere to international law and existing military agreements.

In a statement shared on X, Jean-Baptiste Faivre, France’s charge d’affaires to Syria, expressed deep concern over the deaths and reaffirmed France’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial unity.

France renews call for respecting Golan Buffer agreement

Faivre emphasized the importance of respecting the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israeli and Syrian forces, which established a demilitarized buffer zone following the Yom Kippur War.

He called on Israel to honor the terms of that agreement and refrain from actions that undermine Syria’s territorial integrity.

Faivre called on regional actors to contribute to peace and stability in Syria, noting that international engagement is vital to ensuring the country can emerge as a secure and stable presence for its people and the wider region.

Israeli strike hits Damascus countryside

The Israeli airstrike targeted the town of Beit Jinn and a nearby road leading to Mazraat Beit Jinn in Syria’s Damascus countryside on Friday. Several people were also injured in the attack, according to Syrian reports.

The airstrike comes amid heightened tensions in southern Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024.

In the aftermath, Israel reportedly expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by entering parts of the demilitarized zone, a move viewed by Damascus as a violation of international accords.

According to Syrian government figures, Israel has carried out over 1,000 airstrikes and over 400 cross-border raids into Syria’s southern provinces since December 2024.
