French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday that Russia’s “hybrid threat” against France and Europe had intensified, ordering the government to prepare new measures to protect critical infrastructure and sensitive defense and technology sites from drone and cyberattacks.
“The Russian hybrid threat against Europeans and against France has intensified,” Macron said after meeting French political leaders ahead of next year’s election and before traveling to the U.N. General Assembly next week.
Macron said France’s interior minister had met regional prefects to increase “vigilance in response to the Russian hybrid attacks.”
He said he had instructed the government to prepare a plan to protect critical infrastructure as well as the country’s “most sensitive” defense industry and technology sites against drone and cyberattacks.
Macron said France would also respond to what he described as Russian shadow operations.
“This will not go unanswered,” he said, without giving further details.
Despite the threats, Macron said France would continue supporting Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
“The intention behind it is to intimidate us and to derail the effort to support the Ukrainians. The consequence will be the opposite,” Macron said.
“We are not intimidated, because we know that what is at stake today in Ukraine is our security.”
