Mourners in Istanbul gathered at Fatih Mosque to perform a funeral prayer in absentia for Palestinian journalist Saleh al-Jaafrawi, killed by armed gangs in the Sabra neighborhood of southern Gaza.
Representatives of civil society organizations and a large number of journalists from various media outlets gathered at the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul.
Journalist and activist Saleh Aljafarawi was killed Sunday evening while covering events in Gaza City, reportedly by armed groups operating outside the law, according to local sources.
The Initiative drew a large crowd that gathered after the afternoon prayer to perform a funeral prayer in absentia for the martyred al-Jaafrawi.
The Palestine Initiative and Communication Platform organized the ceremony, which took place after the afternoon prayer.
While Yusuf Ziya Catakli, head of the Media Platform, delivered a speech calling on the Turkish government to allow volunteer journalists to be sent to Gaza.
He stressed that “Türkiye should send those who wish to go voluntarily to Gaza to be a voice of hope there.”
Journalist Ersin Celik, in his speech, noted that al-Jaafrawi was the 255th colleague to be martyred in Gaza since October 7.
“We can train Gaza’s journalists in Türkiye,” Celik said, adding that the duty now falls to journalists. “Of course, a ceasefire is paramount. But we must not close the chapter on the genocide.
As journalists, we must expose the crimes of genocide, because there will be attempts to cover it up, to shut the matter down. They will try to sweep the past under the rug.”
