The Israeli military bombed numerous homes in the Zeitoun neighborhood in southern Gaza City roughly two and a half years ago while residents were still inside, killing many Palestinians from the Erhayim, Balawi, Malaka, Kanbour and Salmi families.

The remains of 100 Palestinians recovered from the rubble were laid side by side in an area amid destroyed buildings in Zeitoun, the neighborhood where the attack took place.

The bodies, wrapped in Palestinian flags, were adorned with flowers.

Thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral, including relatives of the deceased as well as community leaders and political and social figures.

Following funeral prayers, the remains are set to be buried at the Ahli Baptist cemetery in Zeitoun.

Gaza's Civil Defense launched the "Recovery of Martyrs' Remains" project to retrieve bodies buried under rubble left by Israel's intense assault on the Gaza Strip, which began in October 2023.

The remains in Zeitoun were recovered a few days ago as part of the second phase of the project, which was announced on July 19.

Efforts to recover the bodies of those killed in Gaza continue to be hampered by Israel's blockade, with teams working under highly limited and inadequate conditions.

Crews are relying on very few heavy machines and worn-out equipment to carry out the work.

Gaza witnessed a similar funeral last August. The bodies of 112 Palestinians killed and later recovered from the rubble of an Israeli military attack in November 2023, which killed more than 300 people, were laid to rest in a large funeral held in the region.
