The death toll from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since October 2023 has risen to 72,757, while the number of injured reached 172,645, Gaza’s Health Ministry said.
In a written statement, the ministry said 13 bodies and 57 injured people had been brought to hospitals in Gaza over the past 48 hours, as Israeli attacks continued despite a cease-fire.
The ministry said 870 Palestinians had been killed and 2,543 injured in Israeli attacks since the cease-fire took effect on Oct. 10, 2025.
It added that 771 bodies had been recovered from under the rubble during the same period.
The statement also said one person died in a building collapse, raising the number of deaths from building collapses to 30.
Thousands of bodies are still believed to be under the rubble across the Gaza Strip.
The U.N. Human Rights Office said Israel’s torture and mistreatment of Palestinian detainees was “unacceptable” and called for independent, impartial and transparent investigations into every case of death, torture, mistreatment and other inhumane treatment.
Thameen al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, responded in writing to questions about a New York Times investigation by Nicholas Kristof, which reported systematic torture and sexual assault against Palestinian detainees.
“Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody are systematically subjected to torture and ill-treatment, including sexual and gender-based violence. This includes many cases of rape, including against children,” Kheetan said.
Kheetan said the U.N. had confirmed that at least 90 Palestinian detainees had died in Israeli custody since Oct. 7, 2023, including a 17-year-old who showed signs of severe starvation at the time of death.
He said Israeli authorities had also released information indicating additional deaths but did not provide enough detail to verify identities.
Kheetan said the treatment of detainees was part of a flawed Israeli detention and justice system involving arbitrary detention and unfair trials imposed on Palestinians in violation of international law.
“This system must end, and Israel, as an occupying power, must respect international human rights law and its obligations,” Kheetan said.
He said those responsible should be held accountable and that, without such investigations, Israel would be responsible as the detaining authority for every death in its custody.
