Greek defense authorities arrested a member of the armed forces Thursday morning on espionage charges for leaking secret military information to a foreign country, the Greek National Defense General Staff announced.

The arrest took place within a military area in cooperation and coordination with other state services, including an authorized prosecutor, the Greek National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) said in a press release.

"The actions attributed to the arrested individual concern the collection and transmission of secret information of military significance to third parties, with the risk of causing damage to national interests," GEETHA stated.

The officer allegedly had access to sensitive information and was transmitting classified data to an unknown recipient, according to sources close to the investigation.

Intelligence service monitored suspect for months

Greece's National Intelligence Service had been monitoring the military member for months before authorities accelerated the arrest due to concerns about the sensitivity of the information being leaked, sources speaking to CNN Greece said.

The suspect's access to critical national security data prompted the expedited detention.

During the course of his activities, the officer also allegedly attempted to recruit other individuals.

Authorities were able to build their case after discovering specific evidence in the suspect's possession, including software he was using to transmit the sensitive information to unknown recipients.

GEETHA emphasized that clear indications of criminal acts preceded the arrest, as stipulated in the Military Penal Code.

"On Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026, in the early morning hours, the competent military authorities proceeded with the arrest of a member of the Armed Forces," GEETHA stated.

"This arrest took place within a military area, in cooperation and coordination with other state services, in the presence of an authorized prosecutorial body, following clear indications of the commission of criminal acts according to the Military Penal Code," GEETHA added.

The charges specifically relate to the collection and transmission of secret military information to third parties with the risk of causing harm to "national interests."
