Greece's Education Ministry has called on the country's universities to pursue academic and research cooperation with Israeli institutions, urging them to tap into an Israeli-funded initiative aimed at expanding scientific and educational partnerships, the newspaper EFSYN reported Wednesday.
According to a ministry letter obtained by EFSYN, interested Greek higher education institutions were invited to establish partnerships with Israeli counterparts spanning joint research projects, conferences and workshops, student scholarships, and exchange programs for academic staff and students.
The outreach is tied to a program run by Israel's Ministry of Regional Cooperation, which has allocated a budget of 6.5 million shekels, or about 2 million euros, for the effort.
The letter described Greece as a "partner country" for the initiative, stating that promoting research cooperation with Athens, along with broader collaboration across the Eastern Mediterranean, is a strategic priority for the Israeli ministry.
It also referenced a document from the Greek Embassy in Israel that backed efforts to develop and, where possible, deepen academic and research ties between the two countries, citing what it called the "strategic nature" of the bilateral relationship as well as the standing of Israeli universities, particularly in the sciences.
Greece and Israel have expanded diplomatic, military and economic cooperation in recent years, including in energy and defense.
The push for closer academic ties, as outlined in the ministry letter, would extend that cooperation into higher education and scientific research.
