Prince Harry made his first public appearance in London on Thursday, marking his first official outing since returning to Britain with his family three weeks ago.
The 42-year-old prince—who relocated to California with his wife, Meghan, six years ago amid deep family tensions—attended a fundraising gala for the Invictus Games, the international sporting event he founded for wounded veterans.
Dressed in a formal dinner jacket adorned with his military medals, Harry spent the evening mingling and taking selfies with injured former service members. Meghan did not attend the event.
The couple, along with their two children, quietly landed back in the U.K. on Aug. 26 and have maintained a relatively low profile since their arrival.
Speculation abounds over why they have returned, given that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left amid a falling-out with his family, which worsened after Harry published his tell-all memoir "Spare."
His appearance at the event comes after the brother of Princess Diana, Harry's mother, unleashed a barrage of stinging criticism against King Charles III's behavior toward his ex-wife.
In a memoir being serialized in the Daily Mail, a British newspaper, Charles Spencer claimed that the then-prince Charles sounded "giddily elated" the night Diana died in a car crash in 1996.
The claims have prompted Buckingham Palace to issue an unusual rebuttal, insisting that Charles "is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory."
Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in January 2020, in what became widely known as "Megxit," and relocated to California later that year.
The couple detailed their strained relationship with the royal family in a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, a Netflix documentary series in 2022, and Harry's memoir "Spare" in 2023.
The rift has deepened further amid Charles Spencer's new memoir, which includes unverified claims about King Charles III's reaction to Princess Diana's death.
