Al Jazeera reported that seven people were killed in the attack on the journalists’ tent near Al-Shifa Hospital, located outside Gaza’s main gate, Sunday. Among the dead were five of its journalists.
The attack also claimed the life of the prominent reporter Anas al-Sharif along with fellow journalist Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa, and their assistant Mohammed Noufal.
Al Jazeera condemns what it described as the Israeli "deliberate" assassination of its correspondents and cameramen in the Gaza Strip, considering it a "desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza”.
The Israeli military, in a statement, acknowledged targeting correspondent Anas al-Sharif, accusing him of being a “terrorist” affiliated with Hamas.
“The terrorist Anas al-Sharif served as a cell leader in the Hamas terror organization and advanced plans for rocket fire against Israeli civilians and IDF forces,” the military says in a statement.
For several months, the Israeli military accused Sharif of being a Hamas operative, which human rights organizations condemned as a lie to justify the killing of journalists.
Al Jazeera has fiercely denied Israel’s allegations and accused it of systematically targeting Al Jazeera employees in the Gaza Strip.
Anas, born in Jabalia refugee camp, was a prominent 28-year-old Palestinian journalist and videographer for Al Jazeera Arabic, widely recognized for his frontline reporting from northern Gaza during the Gaza war.
With his final words—“Continuous bombing … The Israeli assault on Gaza City has been intensifying for the past two hours,” Sharif ended a life devoted to standing for the truth.
When asked why he continued to report despite threats and fears, his unwavering answer was, “Because stopping is betrayal, and silence is a crime.”
Anas embodies the life of a noble journalist who never backs down or loses hope in speaking the truth. Despite continuous threats from the occupation, he persisted in his work as a correspondent for Al Jazeera. Until his final moments, he strove to fulfill his duty—“with all the effort and strength I have,” as he expressed in his last testament.
He prayed to Allah to extend his life so he could return with his family and loved ones to our original town of occupied Asqalan (Al-Majdal).
The official page of Sharif, Al Jazeera’s correspondent in the Gaza Strip, has published the text of his final will following his death.
In his final message, written on April 6, Sharif said, "This is my will and my final message. If these words reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.”
In the message, Anas entrusted Palestine to those who care about justice and freedom. He described Palestine as a precious and vital part of the Muslim world and a symbol of hope for all free people worldwide.
He urged, “I urge you not to let chains silence you, nor borders restrain you. Be bridges toward the liberation of the land and its people, until the sun of dignity and freedom rises over our stolen homeland.”
The post ends: "Do not forget Gaza … And do not forget me in your righteous prayers for forgiveness and acceptance."
The Head of Communications at the Turkish Presidency Burhanettin Duran strongly condemned Israel’s killing of Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip, stating that Tel Aviv aims to cover up the genocide it is committing.
On Monday, Duran expressed his deep sorrow on the X platform over Israel’s killing of five journalists, including Al Jazeera correspondents Sharif and Mohammad Quraqa, in an airstrike that targeted the journalists' tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in western Gaza City.
Duran said, “I pray for mercy upon our journalist brothers who were martyred while performing their duty, and I extend my deepest condolences to their families.”
The Government Media Office in Gaza stated that the casualties today bring the total number of journalists killed in Israeli bombings since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip to 237.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 61,430 people and wounded 153,213. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.
