An employee at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was killed in a drone attack, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced early Friday, renewing its call for military restraint to prevent a nuclear accident.
The IAEA, the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, confirmed on the U.S. social media platform X that it had been informed of the employee's death, identifying the victim as a reported welder at the plant's centralized repair workshop.
Following the incident, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi condemned attacks targeting nuclear facility workers, emphasizing that protecting personnel is essential to maintaining nuclear safety during armed conflict.
"Any attack on nuclear plant staff is completely unacceptable and violates the Seven Indispensable Pillars for Nuclear Safety and Security during an armed conflict," Grossi said, referring to the agency's framework for safeguarding nuclear facilities during warfare.
The agency also reiterated Grossi's appeal for "maximum military restraint to help prevent the risk of a nuclear accident during the conflict."
His warning highlighted the importance of protecting nuclear plant personnel as the conflict continues.
