A recent report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) documented the displacement of 468 families in Yemen, over 2,800 people, in January.

According to the report issued by the U.N. agency’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), 40 families comprising 240 individuals were displaced in the final week of January.

It said 33 families settled in Marib after arriving from Hadramout and Taiz, while four families moved to Al Mahrah from Lahj, and three families went to Shabwah, all coming from Al Hudaydah.

The IOM, in a recent warning, said families are arriving in host areas “exhausted and vulnerable” amid rising waves of displacement.

Access limits reporting

The report noted that Yemen’s DTM is unable to report figures in some governorates due to access constraints.

The organization also identified 25 additional families displaced during the previous reporting period, covering Jan. 18-24, 2026, in the governorates of Marib, Taiz, Al Hudaydah and Hadramout.

These figures were added to the cumulative displacement total recorded since the beginning of the year.

About two weeks ago, the IOM said over 13,000 people were displaced in Yemen during the last quarter of last year.

Government forces regain control

The organization typically attributes displacement to insecurity linked to the conflict, as well as difficult economic conditions, natural hazards and health-related reasons.

In early December, parts of eastern and southern Yemen saw clashes after forces of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which seeks the secession of southern Yemen, moved into Hadramout and Al Mahrah and took control.

Government forces, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, regained control of the two governorates in early January.

The organization notes that access restrictions in some governorates may prevent complete reporting, meaning the figures released could be lower than the reality in hard-to-reach areas.

Yemen has been gripped by war and its ongoing repercussions for over 10 years.

According to the 2025 Yemen Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan issued by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the number of internally displaced people is estimated at about 4.8 million.
