Iran accused the United States on Saturday of a "blatant violation" of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ending the Middle East war, after American strikes hit Iranian coastal surveillance facilities the previous evening in response to a drone attack on a cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
"These brutal attacks, which targeted Iranian coastal surveillance facilities, are a blatant violation" of the Memorandum of Understanding to end the war, Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
In its full statement, Iran's Foreign Ministry "strongly condemns" the airstrikes carried out by what it called the "terrorist U.S. army" on the evening of Friday against several points along Iran's southern coast.
The ministry said the strikes, which targeted Iran's coastal surveillance facilities, constitute "a blatant violation of Article 2, paragraph 4 of the U.N. Charter, as well as an explicit violation of Article 1 of the Memorandum of Understanding ending the imposed war, dated June 18, 2026."
The ministry also said the "occupying and apartheid Zionist regime" carried out an attack on Lebanon in coordination with the United States, which it likewise described as "a blatant violation of Article 1 of the Memorandum of Understanding ending the war."
While affirming Iran's "inherent right to self-defense" under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the ministry stated that "the Islamic Republic of Iran will defend the sovereignty, security and national interests of the country with all its strength."
It said the defensive strikes carried out by Iran's armed forces against targets linked to "aggressor American forces" were conducted on this basis.
The ministry said responsibility for the consequences of the situation "clearly lies with the aggressive and treaty-breaking American regime and any parties that in any way collude in the commission of America's aggressive actions against Iran."
It reiterated the necessity for all countries on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf to adhere to the principle of good neighborliness and the fundamental principle of international law, preventing aggressor parties from using their territory and facilities to carry out aggressive actions against Iran.
The Foreign Ministry also called on the U.N. Secretary-General, the Security Council, and other responsible international bodies "not to remain indifferent" to what it called America's flagrant violation of the fundamental principles and rules of the U.N. Charter and international law and to act on their "legal and moral responsibilities" toward regional and international peace and security.
The strikes followed a U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announcement Friday that American aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radar facilities, in response to an attack on a commercial ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
A senior U.S. official told Fox News that six U.S. aircraft struck four targets along the Iranian coast bordering the strait and Qeshm Island.
U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Tehran launched at least four one-way attack drones at ships, saying American forces intercepted three while one struck a cargo ship, causing damage.
He described the attack as a "foolish violation" of the ceasefire agreement. Asked by reporters about a potential U.S. response, Trump said: "You'll find out."
Vice President JD Vance issued a pointed warning later in the day.
"Violence will be met with violence," he wrote on X. "Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honored it. If they have disagreements about how the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) is being applied, they can pick up the phone."
CENTCOM described the alleged Iranian attack as "dangerous behavior," saying Iran's "unwarranted aggression" clearly violated the ceasefire.
