Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it has attacked two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, according to a statement reported by Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency.

The Thai-flagged bulk carrier Mayuree Naree was fired upon after "disregarding warnings and insistently attempting to illegally pass through the Strait of Hormuz," the IRGC said, according to Fars.

Another vessel, the Liberian-flagged Express Rome, was also struck by Iranian projectiles after ignoring warnings from the IRGC Navy, the armed forces said, according to the report.

Data from analytics provider MarineTraffic showed both vessels were in the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the day.

Attacks follow rising maritime tensions

According to United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, at least 13 attacks on vessels have occurred around the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman since the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran and Tehran's retaliatory attacks began on Feb. 28.

Three of those incidents took place on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, a spokesperson for Tehran's Khatam al-Anbiya military command headquarters said Iran "will never allow even a single liter of oil to pass through the Strait of Hormuz for the benefit of the United States, the Zionists, or their partners."

"Any vessel, or any oil cargo belonging to the United States, the Israeli regime, or their hostile partners will be considered a legitimate target," the statement said.

"We will pursue a policy of strike after strike until you are fully punished and regret your actions."
