Iran confirmed on Monday that Revolutionary Guard Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri had been killed, days after Israel said it targeted him in an airstrike.
The confirmation came in a statement carried by Iranian state media, which said Tangsiri died due to the severity of his injuries.
A statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, read on state television and reported by IRNA and Sepah News, said Tangsiri “joined the ranks of Allah due to the severity of his injuries.”
It added that he had “succumbed to severe injuries” sustained in the attack.
The statement praised Tangsiri’s role, particularly in efforts linked to Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.
“Every fighter is a Tangsiri, and we will see what surprises they will bring in the days and months ahead,” it said.
Israel had previously said it killed Tangsiri in a strike last week.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the commander was killed along with other officials in what he described as a “precise and lethal operation” conducted by the Israeli army.
The confirmation by Iran follows earlier Israeli claims regarding the targeting of senior Iranian military figures in ongoing strikes.
