Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet mediators in New York on Monday to discuss proposals concerning the Strait of Hormuz and talks with the United States, Iranian news agency ISNA reported.
No U.S. representative will attend the meeting, the agency said.
Araghchi and the Iranian delegation are due to review the latest proposals and views on the current situation with mediators, according to ISNA.
At the start of his New York visit, Araghchi said Iran had proposed reopening the strait as part of an agreement to end the war, in exchange for the release of Iranian funds and assets that Tehran says have been unlawfully frozen.
ISNA said the proposal was conveyed to the U.S. side through mediators in New York.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he had rejected it, the agency reported, while adding that messages continued to be exchanged in efforts to resume negotiations, lift the U.S. naval blockade and reopen the strait.
Asked earlier about the U.S. response to Iran’s seven-point proposal, Araghchi said: “We saw the initial reaction from the U.S. president, but the mediators have not yet conveyed anything to us.”
“We are waiting for the intermediaries to convey a definitive response, and we will decide accordingly,” he said.
“In any case, our conditions are clear. Any progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on those conditions being met, and we will not back down from them.”
The new proposal lays out a roadmap to open the Strait of Hormuz to normal maritime passage within a week.
It calls for the United States to release frozen Iranian assets, lift oil sanctions and end the naval blockade on Iranian ports, after which the strategic waterway could be reopened and negotiations on a final deal would start.
Meanwhile, Iran’s delegation in New York for the U.N. General Assembly is not planning further talks with the United States, state media reported Monday, after Trump said he expected more negotiations soon.
Iranian and U.S. officials last week held indirect talks mediated by Qatar on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting, with Tehran saying it presented seven conditions for ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
State news agency IRNA on Monday quoted an unnamed source close to the U.N. delegation as saying there were no more talks scheduled.
“Iran’s delegation in New York has no plans for negotiations with the United States,” IRNA quoted the source as saying.
“Iran’s views and positions were conveyed clearly and explicitly to the U.S. side ... via a Qatari mediator,” IRNA said.
The Iranian delegation is expected to return to Tehran on Tuesday, the agency added.
Trump publicly rejected Iran’s latest proposal for ending the war on Saturday but told U.S. media outlet Axios on Sunday that he expected talks to resume in the coming days.
Despite Trump’s rejection, Tehran has said it is waiting for a formal U.S. response before deciding on its next steps.
Axios said further indirect talks mediated by Qatar could take place as early as Monday.
Last week’s discussions were held by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner with Araghchi.
The Strait of Hormuz lies at the heart of the conflict, which began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
The strategic shipping route carried one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas before the war began.
Tehran imposed a blockade on Hormuz after the war started, prompting Washington to respond with its own blockade on Iranian ports.
As a precondition for ending its blockade, Iran is demanding a seven-day cease-fire across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, where its ally Hezbollah has been battling Israeli forces.
It is also demanding the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad, the lifting of sanctions on its oil sector and an end to the U.S. naval blockade.
Fighting between the two sides has subsided in recent weeks, with the United States not striking Iran since Sept. 1, but Tehran has continued to target commercial vessels in Hormuz.
