Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Tuesday that Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary forces, was killed in a strike attributed to the United States and Israel.

“Commander Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij Organization, has been martyred,” the Guards said on their Sepah News website.

The confirmation followed earlier reports carried by Fars News Agency, which cited the Revolutionary Guard but did not provide further details.

Israel claims strike, other targets reported

Earlier Tuesday, Israel said it had killed Soleimani in an air strike and also announced the assassination of Tehran’s national security chief Ali Larijani.

Iranian authorities later confirmed Soleimani’s death but have not confirmed whether Larijani was killed.

Ongoing war and rising toll

Israel and the U.S. have continued joint attacks on Iran since Feb. 28, with around 1,300 people reported killed, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military assets.

The attacks have caused casualties and damage to infrastructure, while also disrupting global markets and aviation.
