Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani said Iran has secured and stockpiled essential goods for the coming months, saying the country does not face a supply problem despite renewed tensions with the U.S.
Speaking at a meeting in Mashhad, Zakani said essential goods would continue to be obtained periodically through alternative channels and placed in storage, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
“Thanks to the efforts of government officials and other authorities, the country’s essential and livelihood-related goods have been supplied and stockpiled for the coming months,” Zakani said.
He urged people to avoid making statements that could discourage the public.
Zakani said the Central Bank holds more than $36 billion in foreign currency and gold reserves.
He also said $130 billion in liquidity had been made available for public use, arguing that these resources meant there was no problem with the supply of essential goods.
Zakani said that after the current period, basic necessities would continue to be sourced and stored through other channels on a regular basis.
Zakani’s comments come as tensions between Iran and the U.S. have again escalated.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday that continuing the war with the U.S. was not in Iran’s interest, following a fresh military flare-up between the two countries.
“We continue to strive for a path of agreement and understanding, and we believe that continuing the war is neither in our interest, nor in the interest of the region,” Pezeshkian said during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan.
“We believe that the solution to the existing problems is dialogue and cooperation, and all capacities must be used to prevent the spread of insecurity and conflict,” he added, according to a statement from the Iranian presidency.
His remarks followed a U.S. attack on Iran’s Larak Island, which marked the first exchange of fire in a month between Iran and the U.S. around the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran responded with strikes on bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates that it said were used by the U.S. military.
