Iran on Sunday appointed cleric Alireza Arafi to an interim leadership council following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in U.S.-Israeli strikes, Iranian state media reported.,
Mohsen Dehnavi, spokesperson for Iran Expediency Discernment Council, said in a post o X that appointment was made in line with Article 111 of Iranian Constitution.
"The Expediency Discernment Council has elected Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as a member of the interim leadership council," he said.
Arafi will serve on the council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and judiciary chief.
Dehnavi said that until a new supreme leader is chosen, a temporary Leadership Council is formed consisting of country president Masoud Pezeshkian, head of judiciary and one clerical member of Guardian Council.
The interim council, which will also include the president and the head of the judiciary, will lead the country until the Assembly of Experts "elects a permanent leader as soon as possible".
He added that council selected Arafi as its clerical representative to ensure continuity of leadership while Assembly of Experts moves to select a permanent leader “as soon as possible.”
