Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Sunday that an interim leadership council established after the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has begun its work.

“The interim leadership council started its work... we will continue with all our strength along the path set by Imam Khomeinei,” founder of the Islamic republic, Pezeshkian said in a recorded video statement broadcast on state television.

Iran 'will forcefully crush the enemy’s bases'

He added that the Iran’s military “will forcefully crush the enemy’s bases.”

At the beginning of his message, Pezeshkian offered condolences over Khamenei’s death and confirmed that the interim Leadership Council has started carrying out its responsibilities.

The United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on Saturday, killing several top Iranian leaders, including Khamenei. Tehran retaliated with a series of drone and missile attacks that targeted Israel, U.S. assets and several Gulf countries.

Israel and the United States launched a similar attack on Iran last June, triggering a 12-day war before a ceasefire was announced.
