Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran is ready to continue the diplomatic process for a just solution that guarantees peace and calm in the region, but said this depends on a change in the U.S. approach.
Pezeshkian made the remarks during a phone call with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, according to a written statement from the Iranian government information portal.
Pezeshkian described statements by U.S. officials as “provocative” and said the blockade of Iranian ports was unacceptable and violated international laws and regulations.
“These actions will make the situation in the region even more complicated,” he said.
He also underlined Iran’s determination to defend what he called its “legitimate rights.”
Pezeshkian said Iran is ready to pursue diplomacy for a fair solution that ensures peace and calm in the region but said this depends on the U.S. side stopping its “extreme approach” and “provocative actions.”
Pezeshkian said insecurity in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz was the result of U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran.
He said all countries should take a firm position against U.S. actions that threaten international navigation.
Takaichi said tensions in the Middle East should be resolved peacefully.
She said Japan believes dialogue and consultations can help reduce tensions in the region.
Takaichi thanked Iran for allowing Japanese ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and requested safe passage for other waiting Japanese vessels.
She also said Japan hopes negotiations between Iran and the U.S. will resume soon and that a final agreement will be reached.
