Iran said Saturday it is reviewing new proposals from the United States delivered in recent days, but signaled that its position in ongoing negotiations remains unchanged, while U.S. President Donald Trump said talks were continuing and voiced frustration with Tehran's approach.
In a statement, Iran's Supreme National Security Council said "new proposals have been put forward by the Americans" in recent days and that the Islamic Republic is currently reviewing them and has not yet responded.
The council said the commander of the Pakistani army had been in Tehran as an intermediary and mediator in the negotiations.
It said Iran's negotiating delegation "will not make even the slightest compromise, retreat or leniency, and will defend with all its strength the interests of the Iranian nation."
Trump said Saturday that negotiations with Iran are ongoing, while suggesting frustration with Tehran's conduct.
"We have very good conversations going on," Trump said on Iran.
"They got a little cute, as they have been doing for 47 years," Trump added.
Trump also said, "They wanted to close up the strait again, as they've been doing for years. They can't blackmail us."
He said he would have some more information "by the end of the day."
Despite the diplomatic channel, Iran stressed that its position remains firm and said its negotiating team would not show leniency in the talks.
Trump, meanwhile, said the U.S. was maintaining a tough stance.
"We're talking to them, and you know, we're taking a tough stand. They killed a lot of people. A lot of our people have been killed," he said.
Iran's top national security body said the country had not yet issued a response to the new U.S. proposals.
The statement said the proposals were received in recent days and were still being assessed, even as Tehran warned that its negotiators would cut no compromises with Washington.
