Iran said Wednesday that exchanges with the United States have continued through Pakistan after negotiations over the weekend ended without a breakthrough, with Tehran also saying it was very likely to receive a Pakistani delegation later in the day.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said contacts had continued since the Iranian delegation returned to Tehran on Sunday.
“Since Sunday, when the Iranian delegation returned to Tehran, several messages have been exchanged through Pakistan,” Baqaei said.
He added that Pakistan was expected to remain involved in the follow-up contacts.
Baqaei said the exchanges with the U.S. had continued through Pakistan in the days following the failed negotiations.
His remarks indicated that communication had not stopped after the weekend talks ended without an agreement.
According to Baqaei, the message exchange began after the Iranian delegation’s return to Tehran on Sunday.
Baqaei also said Iran was very likely to receive a Pakistani delegation on Wednesday.
“Today, we are very likely to receive a Pakistani delegation as a continuation of the discussions in Islamabad,” he said.
His comments linked the expected visit directly to the earlier talks in Islamabad and suggested that Pakistan was continuing to play a mediating role in the contacts between Tehran and Washington.
