Iran has demanded compensation from five regional countries, it says, that participated in the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran, naming Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
Iran’s state media reported that Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, said the five countries had violated their international obligations toward the Islamic Republic of Iran and were therefore internationally responsible.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Iravani said the countries must “make full compensation for the damages caused to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including payment of compensation for all material and moral damages resulting from their international violations.”
Iran said the countries included Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
Tehran accused the five states of participating in the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran and said they should pay compensation for the damage caused.
The demand was voiced by Iravani in his capacity as Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, according to Iranian state media and IRNA.
Iravani said the five countries, through what he described as internationally wrongful acts, had violated their obligations under international law toward Iran.
He said that, as a result, their international responsibility had been established.
According to the statement carried by Iranian media, the countries must provide “full compensation” to Iran, including compensation for both material and moral damage stemming from those actions.
The compensation demand came after Iran itself launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks on its Gulf neighbors during the war.
According to the report, Tehran carried out those attacks in an attempt to pressure the U.S. and Israel into a ceasefire.
Iran’s state media nonetheless said Tehran was seeking compensation from the five countries it accused of taking part in the conflict against it.
In comments cited by Iranian media, Iravani said Iran was formally demanding compensation from the five regional countries because of their alleged role in the war.
He said they were required to compensate the Islamic Republic of Iran for all losses caused by what he called their violations of international law.
The demand added a diplomatic and legal dimension to the broader fallout from the war, with Tehran pressing its case through its representative at the United Nations.
