Iran said Thursday that it targeted the headquarters of Kurdish forces in Iraq's Kurdish region, according to Iranian state media, following strikes on Kurdish regions in both Iran and Iraq.
“We targeted the headquarters of Kurdish groups opposed to the revolution in Iraqi Kurdistan with three missiles,” Iran’s official IRNA news agency posted on Telegram, quoting a military statement.
Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned opposition Kurdish groups planning to cross from Iraq into Iran not to take action by viewing the situation as an opportunity, stressing that they would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Larijani’s remarks were shared on the social media account of Iranian state television.
According to the statement, Larijani referred to claims that Kurdish groups opposed to the Iranian regime in Iraq would cross the border to fight against Tehran.
“Separatist groups should not attempt to take action by thinking that the direction of the wind has changed. We will not show them any tolerance under any circumstances,” Larijani said.
Larijani also said the country’s armed forces fully control the situation.
U.S. officials speaking to The Wall Street Journal said President Donald Trump is open to supporting groups willing to arm themselves to overthrow the Iranian regime and that such groups could be turned into ground forces for the United States in Iran.
The U.S. television network CNN also reported, citing U.S. sources, that the Central Intelligence Agency is attempting to arm Kurdish opposition groups in Iran to provoke an uprising.
The sources alleged that the U.S. administration is conducting active talks with Iranian opposition groups and Iranian Kurdish opposition representatives who have taken refuge in the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq regarding the provision of military support.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on whether the United States is considering arming Kurdish forces in the region to encourage a popular uprising in Iran.
“Reports claiming that the President has approved such a plan are completely false and should not be written in this way,” she said.
The groups in question also denied the claims.
