Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said Monday it would target power plants across the Middle East if the United States attacks Iran’s electricity infrastructure, in response to President Donald Trump’s threat to strike Iranian facilities unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened within 48 hours.

The warning came as a response to a deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said Washington would begin striking Iranian power facilities within 48 hours if Tehran does not ensure the waterway remains open to shipping.

Gulf plants powering US bases could be targeted

In a statement broadcast on state television, the Revolutionary Guard said any strike on Iran’s power plants would trigger attacks on Israel’s electricity infrastructure and on facilities in regional countries that supply power to U.S. military bases.

The statement also indicated that economic, industrial and energy infrastructure linked to American interests in the region would be included in potential targets.

"What we have done is to announce our decision that if the power plants are attacked, Iran will retaliate by targeting the power plants of the occupying regime and the power plants of regional countries that supply electricity to U.S. bases, as well as the economic, industrial and energy infrastructures in which Americans have shares," the statement said. "Do not doubt that we will do this."

Trump gives Iran 48 hours, threatens to hit power plants

On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump gave Iran 48 hours to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that Washington would target Iranian power plants if shipping is not restored.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!"

Trump did not name which facility he considers the largest. Iran’s biggest power plant is the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant on the Persian Gulf, the country’s only commercial nuclear facility.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key energy corridor that handles about one-fifth of global oil and LNG shipments, has been effectively disrupted since early March, pushing oil prices higher.
