Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) General Jabari said on Monday the Strait of Hormuz is closed and warned that any ship attempting to pass through will be set ablaze by Iranian naval forces.
He said oil pipelines will be struck, no exports will be allowed from the region and oil prices will reach $200 in the coming days.
Jabari said the world had been transporting 20 million barrels of oil per day through the strait, but that “now nothing will move.”
He warned that anyone entering the area would face a decisive response, pipelines would be hit and not a single drop of oil would reach U.S. markets.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps said Monday it hit an oil tanker it accused of attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz “illegally.”
In a statement, the corps said the oil tanker Athena Nova, which it described as belonging to U.S. allies, was struck by two unmanned aerial vehicles in the strait.
The corps said a fire broke out on the tanker after it was targeted.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas exports from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. About 20% of global daily oil consumption, roughly 20 million barrels, passes through the corridor.
The developments come after the U.S. and Israel launched a major offensive against Iran on Saturday, killing several high-ranking Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and regional locations hosting U.S. military assets, heightening tensions across the Middle East.
