Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi appeared to liken U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz would soon become U.S. territory to symptoms of schizophrenia, responding Friday on social media after Trump escalated his rhetoric over the strategic waterway.

“Schizophrenia is a complex and acute psychotic disorder that manifests with disturbances in thinking and a distorted perception of reality,” Gharibabadi wrote on the U.S.-based social media platform X.

“Its most common symptom is also hallucinations and delusions. Psychologists recommend that such patients should be under 24-hour supervision and receive treatment,” he added.

Trump says Hormuz could become US territory

Trump said previously that he would “soon” declare the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States as Washington maintains a blockade against Iran.

“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I'll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said during remarks at the David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence in Nassau County, New York.

Trump did not explain how such a declaration would work or what consequences it could have.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway carrying a significant share of global oil supplies.
