Iranian missile and drone attacks on Abu Dhabi caused significant damage to a major aluminum production facility operated by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), injuring several employees and triggering fires in an industrial zone, officials and the company said.

EGA said its Al Taweelah site, located in the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi, sustained “significant damage” during the attack. A number of employees were injured, though the company said none of the injuries were life threatening.

Authorities reported that six people were wounded in the attack.

Facility damage and injuries reported

EGA, the Middle East’s largest aluminum producer and one of the world’s largest suppliers, said it is assessing the extent of the damage.

“The safety and security of our people is our top priority at EGA at all times,” CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban said. “We are deeply saddened and are assessing the damage to our facilities.”

The company is responsible for about 4% of global aluminum production and nearly half of the aluminum produced in the Gulf region.

Fires break out after intercepted attack

The Emirati defense ministry said it intercepted the missile and drone attack, but falling debris sparked two fires in the Khalifa industrial zone along the emirate’s coast.

Authorities later reported a third fire, adding that all three fires were brought under control.

Five Indian nationals were injured with moderate to minor wounds, and a Pakistani man was also injured in the incidents.

UAE targeted amid regional conflict

The United Arab Emirates, a close U.S. ally and one of the few Arab countries to normalize relations with Israel, has been a main target of Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Gulf neighbors since the war began on February 28.

The attack on the EGA facility highlights the impact of the ongoing conflict on key economic infrastructure in the region.
