Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to New York in the coming days to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, local media reported.
Pezeshkian is expected to address the General Assembly on Wednesday, Sept. 23, presenting Iran’s position on international developments, with the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel expected to feature prominently in his remarks, according to Tasnim.
He is also due to hold meetings and consultations with leaders from several countries on the sidelines of the gathering. A high-ranking Iranian delegation is expected to accompany the president during the trip.
The United Nations has scheduled the high-level week for Sept. 22-29, with the General Assembly’s general debate running from Sept. 22-26 and on Sept. 28 at UN headquarters in New York.
The United States approved visas for Pezeshkian, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other members of Tehran’s core delegation, the U.S. State Department said this week. The decision was consistent with Washington’s obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters, the department added.
The Iranian delegation, however, is smaller than last year and faces travel restrictions and limits on the purchase of luxury and other goods.
Under the restrictions, members of the delegation are expected to have limited movement in New York, with access largely confined to locations connected to their diplomatic and UN activities.
The visa decision comes as Washington and Tehran remain in conflict amid a war that began on Feb. 28 with a U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran, while intermittent diplomatic contacts between the two sides have continued since then.
The 81st General Assembly is being held under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All." The high-level debate is set to bring heads of state and government and other senior representatives to New York.
The session is expected to focus heavily on international conflicts and diplomatic efforts, with the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel among the issues drawing particular attention.
Other major issues on the agenda include the war in Ukraine, tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, Sudan’s conflict and the growing international debate over the governance of artificial intelligence.
The U.N. has also scheduled high-level meetings on climate action, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness and nuclear disarmament during the week.
