Kuwait condemned the storming of its consulate general in Iraq's Basra by a group of protesters, calling it an unacceptable and serious violation of diplomatic norms and conventions.
Meanwhile, Iraq said it had formed an investigative committee over the incident and strongly denounced the assault.
In a written statement, Kuwait's Foreign Ministry said the storming of the Kuwaiti Consulate General in Basra constituted a grave and unacceptable violation under diplomatic norms and conventions.
It held the Iraqi government responsible for security lapses related to diplomatic missions on Iraqi territory and called on Baghdad to take the necessary steps to hold all those involved accountable.
Iraq's Foreign Ministry also issued a written statement strongly condemning the assault on Kuwait's consulate general in Basra and said a committee had been formed to investigate the incident.

In the statement, Kuwait said the act represented a serious and blatant breach of Iraq's international obligations, particularly those related to the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, including Article 31, which requires the host country to protect consular premises.
Kuwait also said Baghdad bore responsibility for security negligence concerning diplomatic missions on Iraqi soil.
The ministry called on the Iraqi government to take the necessary measures to hold accountable everyone involved in the attack.
It also said Kuwait is not a party to ongoing regional and international rivalries and does not allow attacks on any foreign diplomatic mission on its own territory.

According to the reports, the protesters stormed the consulate and lowered the Kuwaiti flag from the building.
The incident followed a protest by an Iraqi group over an attack on a residential area in Basra's Khor al-Zubair district.
The protesters claimed the attack had been a U.S.-linked strike launched from Kuwait.
Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia condemned the action targeting Kuwait's consulate general and shared messages of solidarity with Kuwait.
