Iraq’s government said negotiations with armed groups over surrendering their weapons to the state are progressing positively, with a Sept. 30 deadline remaining in place.
Government spokesperson Haydar al-Abbudi told a news conference that talks were continuing regularly despite some Shiite armed groups maintaining that they would not hand over their weapons.
“The state is close to concluding the weapons handover file,” Abbudi said.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had previously announced Sept. 30 as the deadline for armed groups to surrender their weapons to the state.
Abbudi said proposals had been made for some advisers affiliated with the U.S.-led coalition forces to remain in Iraq, but Zeydi did not accept them.
He said coalition forces are expected to leave the country by Sept. 30.
The complete withdrawal of the U.S.-led coalition from Iraq is also expected by that date.
Abbudi said Iraq’s oil exports were continuing regularly at more than 2 million barrels per day.
He also said Zaidi is scheduled to make official visits to Paris and Berlin during the first half of September.
