The Iraqi military has assumed control of the Ain al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq following the withdrawal of US-led international coalition forces, the Defense Ministry announced Saturday.
In a statement, the ministry said the Iraqi army formally took over management of the base after coalition troops completed their departure from the facility.
Chief of General Staff Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah visited the base to oversee the redistribution of duties and responsibilities among Iraqi units following the handover, according to the official Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The US-led international coalition was formed in 2014 to combat the Daesh terror group after it captured Mosul and large parts of Iraqi territory.
In addition to Ain al-Asad, coalition forces have historically operated from a central base in Baghdad, facilities in Erbil, and several training camps across the country.
Separately, Hakan Fidan held phone calls Saturday with Fuad Hussein and Ayman Safadi, Turkish diplomatic sources said.
During the calls, the foreign ministers exchanged views on recent regional developments and issues contributing to heightened tensions across the Middle East.
