An Iraqi militia entered Al-Zuwairiyah in eastern Syria, where it threatened residents, local sources reported Monday.
The local news outlet Furat Post reported that the militia remained in the area for several hours, threatening shepherds and local residents, warning that anyone approaching the Syrian-Iraqi border would be killed. The group also hurled insults at the Syrian government before withdrawing back into Iraq.
Following the incident, Syria's Internal Security Forces and the 86th Division declared a state of alert in the Al-Bukamal desert and along the Syrian-Iraqi border. This marks the first such occurrence since the fall of the former regime.
A commander from Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces’ (PMF) 7th Brigade said clashes had broken out along the Syrian-Iraqi border after “armed men” opened fire from inside Syrian territory toward PMF forces, according to his account.
According to the commander, the clashes lasted for nearly two hours, with no casualties reported among the PMF.
However, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior later issued a firm denial of any clashes along the Iraqi-Syrian border, stating that the reports circulating on the matter are baseless.
