A diplomatic cable sent to the U.S. State Department said Israel believes Iran’s leadership is “not cracking” and remains “ready to fight to the end,” according to a report.
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that it had obtained the cable, which was circulated by the U.S. Embassy in Israel and sent to Washington on March 13.
The cable said that despite the death of former Iranian leader Ali Khamenei and ongoing U.S.-Israeli strikes, Israeli officials assessed that Tehran’s leadership is “not broken” and prepared to continue fighting.
According to the cable, Israeli officials hope for an uprising in Iran and said the United States should be prepared to support protesters if that occurs.
However, the cable warned that demonstrators could be “massacred,” citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ “superiority.”
The document summarized meetings held March 11–12 between U.S. officials and senior Israeli officials from the National Security Council, Defense Ministry and Foreign Ministry, the report said.
The developments come as Israel and the United States have continued a military offensive on Iran since Feb. 28.
The strikes have killed more than 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian authorities.
Iran has responded with attacks on targets across the region, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, where U.S. military bases are located, as well as Israel.
Iranian officials say the number of injured has surpassed 17,000.
