Israeli military are preparing to intercept a large humanitarian aid flotilla currently sailing through the Mediterranean Sea toward Gaza, according to Israeli state television KAN on Sunday.

Israeli naval commandos from the elite Shayetet unit have conducted recent training exercises in open waters focused on ship interception operations, KAN reported. The broadcaster claimed these drills were designed to minimize potential harm to participants during any intervention.

Flotilla represents largest Gaza aid effort

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which KAN reports will reach the Gaza Strip within four days, consists of dozens of ships carrying humanitarian supplies, particularly medical aid materials. The flotilla represents the largest collective maritime effort to deliver aid to Gaza to date.

According to KAN, Israel has recently proposed alternative routes for delivering the humanitarian aid through Ashkelon Port, Cyprus, or Vatican channels. The flotilla organizers rejected these proposals, leading Tel Aviv to characterize the maritime mission as an "organized provocation."

The flotilla's name carries significant meaning in Palestinian culture. "Sumud," an Arabic term meaning "steadfastness" or "unwavering determination," emerged as a defining concept among Palestinians following the 1967 Six-Day War.

The term encompasses staying on Palestinian land, maintaining Palestinian identity and culture, and building alternative institutions through non-violent civil disobedience as forms of resistance to occupation. In Palestinian symbolism, the olive tree and pregnant village woman represent this concept of steadfast endurance.

The flotilla continues its journey toward Gaza as tensions mount over Israel's stated intention to prevent the ships from reaching their destination. The developing situation highlights ongoing international efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza amid the current conflict.
