The Israeli army targeted Abu Ubaida, spokesman for Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades, in its latest attack on Gaza, though it remains unclear if the attempt was successful, Israel-based Channel 12 reported Saturday.
Citing an Israeli army official, the report said the military attempted to assassinate the Hamas military wing spokesman, but it is not yet clear whether the strike succeeded.
Israel’s ongoing offensive is part of Operation Gideon 2, approved by Defense Minister Israel Katz on Aug. 21, aimed at occupying Gaza City. The operation began two weeks ago in the Zeitoun neighborhood with large-scale attacks that are still underway.
Meanwhile, a military statement confirmed that an airstrike targeted what it called a “key” Hamas member in Gaza City, without giving further details.
Public broadcaster also said an airstrike targeted the spokesman of Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, in Gaza City.
Meanwhile, medical sources said early Saturday that seven Palestinian people were killed and others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in the al-Rimal neighborhood in western Gaza City.
Witnesses also said the building was inhabited, with most of its residents being women, children, and displaced civilians.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 63,400 Palestinians, according to officials. The assault has devastated the enclave, which is now facing famine.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war on the enclave.
