Israel reportedly attempted to kill a senior Hamas figure in an overnight airstrike on Gaza City, Israeli media reported Saturday, as Palestinian officials said Israeli attacks killed five people and wounded six others across the enclave.

Haaretz, citing an Israeli security source, reported that Israel attempted to assassinate Ali al-Amoudi, head of Hamas’ political wing in Gaza, in a strike on western Gaza City.

Amoudi has been reported as a frontrunner to succeed Khalil al-Hayya as head of Hamas’ political bureau in the Gaza Strip. He is also widely seen as the Gaza “successor” to Yahya Sinwar, the former Hamas leader who was killed in 2024.

There was no immediate official comment from the Israeli military on the reported assassination attempt, and it remained unclear whether it was successful.

5 Palestinians killed in Gaza City strike

The Israeli army killed five Palestinians and wounded six others in the Gaza Strip on Saturday amid continuing violations of a ceasefire in place since October 2025.

Four women, including two Christians, and a young man were among those killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a residential apartment in western Gaza City, a medical source at Al-Shifa Hospital told Turkish news agency Anadolu.

Meanwhile, Amoudi was not immediately named among the killed.

Local sources and eyewitnesses said Israeli warplanes fired at least two missiles at an apartment in the Asala residential building early Saturday, destroying the targeted unit and causing extensive damage to neighboring homes.

A fire also broke out after the bombardment.

Local sources said the Israeli army also carried out a demolition operation targeting buildings and facilities in areas under its control east of the Tuffah neighborhood in northeastern Gaza City.
