An Israeli airstrike targeting Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis has killed two Palestinians, including a journalist, according to local health authorities.
The Gaza-based Ministry of Health reported that the Israeli military directly struck a building within the hospital complex, which had been used for operating rooms. Initial reports confirm the deaths of two individuals and note that medical staff and patients were also wounded in the attack.
Repeated attacks on medical facilities, the ministry said, indicate a deliberate effort to further dismantle Gaza’s health care system and to endanger the treatment of the wounded even within hospital premises.
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA identified one of the victims as Hasan Abdulfettah Islih, a journalist who had been receiving treatment at the hospital after being injured in a previous strike.
A statement from the media office of the Gaza-based government noted that Islih, the director of the Alam24 news agency, was the 215th journalist killed since Oct. 7, 2023, as a result of Israeli military operations.
The statement strongly condemned what it described as the systematic targeting and assassination of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces. It called on global press freedom and media organizations to denounce these actions and stand in solidarity with journalists working under siege in Gaza.
It also held not only Israel but also the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France responsible, accusing them of complicity in what it referred to as genocide.
The statement emphasized that Palestinian journalists are being targeted not only while reporting in the field but also while receiving medical treatment in hospitals. Despite what it described as ongoing attempts to intimidate and eliminate them, journalists in Gaza continue to carry out their work.
The media office urged the international community and justice institutions, including the International Criminal Court, to document and prosecute what it called heinous crimes against journalists, civilians, and medical personnel.
