Israeli opposition lawmaker Gilad Kariv on Saturday called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be removed from office, describing his departure as an “existential need for Israeli society.”
Kariv, a member of the Democratic Party, made the remarks on X while criticizing Netanyahu’s handling of Israeli army investigations into the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack.
“Just as Netanyahu avoided visiting the kibbutzim in the area surrounding Gaza for months after Oct. 7, he is also avoiding dealing with the Israeli army’s investigations into everything that happened on Oct. 7,” Kariv said.
He accused Netanyahu of repeatedly “abandoning” Israel’s security and showing “complete incompetence” in managing national security.
“Such a person must not be allowed to make any decisions about our future and the future of our children,” Kariv said, adding that removing Netanyahu as prime minister was an “existential need for Israeli society.”
Opposition parties and broad sections of the Israeli public have demanded a state commission of inquiry into failures surrounding the Oct. 7 attack.
Netanyahu’s government has rejected that mechanism and instead favored a politically appointed panel.
Israel’s Knesset elections are scheduled for Oct. 27, with Netanyahu and his Likud party losing ground in opinion polls.
Netanyahu’s corruption trial remains ongoing.
The International Criminal Court also wants him over accusations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
More than 73,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, while attacks have continued despite a U.S.-sponsored ceasefire.
