Five aid workers from an Istanbul-based international humanitarian organization, IHH, working in coordination with the U.N. World Food Programme were killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, the group announced late Wednesday. Two others were seriously injured.
“Five of our colleagues working on our project in Gaza in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP) were martyred in the recent attacks carried out by the occupying Israeli forces over the past two days, and two others were seriously injured,” the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation said in a statement on X..
The organization condemned what it called a “heinous attack” on humanitarian workers who “risk their lives every day to deliver aid to the oppressed people of Gaza.”
“Our martyrs are Mohammed al-Mubayyid, Ahmed Bustan, Mutaz Rajab, Jamal al-Mubayyid, [and] Ishaq al-Tayf,” the statement said, offering condolences to their families.
On Sunday, WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain warned that half a million people in Gaza are “extremely food insecure” and face the risk of famine.
The Israeli military has continued its offensive in Gaza since October 2023, despite international calls for a cease-fire. More than 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed, according to Gaza health authorities.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to their actions in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for alleged war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
