Representatives from Azerbaijan and Armenia carried out a joint inspection of a railway section connecting the two countries this week, marking another step in efforts to restore cross-border infrastructure between the longtime regional rivals.

The inspection focused on the railway line between the Armenian village of Yeraskh and the town of Sadarak in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, according to reports from both countries' state news agencies Thursday.

Assessment targets construction equipment movement

Azerbaijan's Cabinet of Ministers said the inspection aimed to evaluate whether the Sadarak-Yeraskh railway section could accommodate specialized railway construction equipment, Azerbaijani state news agency Azertac reported. The assessment forms part of broader measures to restore infrastructure in the region.

During the inspection, representatives from both sides discussed the technical condition of railway infrastructure along the route and exchanged views on related issues, according to the reports.

Inspection follows announcement of US-backed transit project

The railway assessment came two days after officials announced an implementation framework for the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity transit project. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio released the framework following talks in Washington.

The TRIPP project would establish a transit corridor linking mainland Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan enclave through Armenian territory. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and US President Donald Trump signed the declaration for the project on Aug. 8 at a summit.

Azerbaijan and Armenia, both former Soviet republics in the South Caucasus region, have experienced decades of territorial disputes centered primarily on the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an Azerbaijani exclave separated from the rest of Azerbaijan by Armenian territory, creating long-standing interest in establishing direct transit routes between the two portions of the country.
