Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have set an ambitious goal to increase their mutual trade turnover to $3 billion within the next five years, the presidents of both countries announced on Friday.
Speaking at a joint news conference in Bishkek, following a meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that this target builds on a strong foundation, citing that mutual trade reached $1.7 billion last year.
"The indicators for the first half of this year are also encouraging. We are interested in increasing the volume of trade to $3 billion over the next five years. Therefore, a special roadmap was signed today," he said.
He emphasized his belief that "there are great opportunities for increasing bilateral trade turnover," pointing to concrete steps already underway.
"Next year, it is planned to launch an Industrial Trade and Logistics Complex under construction on the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border," he said.
Tokayev also highlighted the agricultural sector as one of the most promising areas for growth, noting that it already accounts for 25% of total trade and that the two countries "have enormous potential" in this field.
Beyond trade, Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan's strong economic partnership with its neighbor, revealing that "over the past 20 years, Kazakhstan has invested $1.4 billion into Kyrgyzstan's economy, including socially significant projects."
He also expressed his country's "full support" for Kyrgyzstan's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council for the period from 2027 to 2028.
Echoing the positive outcomes of the negotiations, President Sadyr Japarov confirmed that a highly favorable political climate has developed between the two countries.
This climate, he noted, is crucial, as it contributes significantly to the growth of mutual trade, attracts investments, and expands cultural-humanitarian cooperation.
President Japarov specified that "special attention was paid to such joint projects as launching an industrial trade and logistics complex at the Kyrgyz-Kazakh state border, creating a wholesale distribution center for storing agricultural products in the Almaty region, and constructing the road from Almaty to Issyk-Kul."
