Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei and his family members, who were killed in U.S.-Israeli attacks on Feb. 28, had their coffins brought to Imam Khomeini Musalla Mosque for the funeral ceremony.
Hundreds of thousands of people attended the funeral prayer in Tehran on the second day of the funeral. The entire funeral will last six days and take place in five cities.
Because of the risk of hot weather, cooling systems were set up in the area around the Mosque. Temperatures are expected to rise above 35 degrees during the funeral.
More than 10 million people are reportedly expected to attend the funeral service to pay their last respects to their religious leaders.
To accommodate mourners, schools, mosques, and sports halls were converted into shelters, hotels offered 50% discounts, and bus and rail networks were rerouted to serve the main events.
Mourners at the funeral expressed anger over their leader’s assassination, with posters reading “Revenge.”
Khamenei’s funeral could not be held earlier due to ongoing war and security concerns. It was held after fighting had relatively subsided.
After Tehran, the funeral procession will pass through Qom, Najaf, and Karbala before the body is laid to rest in Khamenei's birthplace, Mashhad.
