Khartoum International Airport received a passenger flight from Port Sudan on Sunday, carrying 160 people, as the first flight to arrive there since the war began, Al Arabiya reported.

An Al Arabiya correspondent said aviation circles in Sudan are expecting 18 foreign airlines to return to Khartoum International Airport in the near term.

That move could significantly change air traffic in the country after years of being limited to a few number of carriers since the war began in April 2023, according to Sudan’s Al-Mashhad website.

Foreign airlines expected to return

The return of foreign airlines is expected to expand travel options and increase competition in Sudan’s air transport sector.

In recent months, Tarco, Badr and Sudanair have played a key role in keeping Sudan connected to the world. Meanwhile, the number of airlines operating through Port Sudan airport has risen.

With foreign carriers returning, the market is expected to see growth in services and available destinations.

Major Arab and international airlines are preparing to resume flights to Khartoum, including four Egyptian carriers, EgyptAir, Nile Air, Al Alamiya and Air Arabia, and three Saudi carriers, Saudia, flynas and flyadeal.

The list also includes Qatar Airways, Turkish airlines and Ethiopian Airlines, as well as airlines from Libya, Syria, Yemen, Kenya and Tunisia.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands of people, displaced millions of others and led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states in the western Darfur region, except for parts of North Darfur that remain under army control.

The army holds most areas of the remaining 13 states across the south, north, east, and center of the country, including Khartoum.
