Milk producers in Kosovo protested on Monday against the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency’s (AUV) decision to suspend the purchase of dairy products by pouring milk onto the ground.
Following a July 2 inspection of one of Kosovo's largest dairy processing plants, the AUV suspended the facility's operations for seven days. This shutdown prompted a subsequent decision to stop purchasing raw milk from local small-scale dairy farmers.
Small-scale dairy farmers, unhappy with the decision, gathered outside the ministry to protest. They poured the hundreds of litres of milk they had brought with them in front of the ministry building.
The producers called not only for the decision to be reviewed, but also for a halt to milk imports from neighboring countries.
Following the protest, they held a meeting with Kosovo’s Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development Armend Muja.
In a written statement, the AUV noted that irregularities were observed at the factory. The agency added that a final assessment and definitive legal findings will be issued once laboratory results are completed.
