Kuwait declared two Iranian diplomats persona non grata and ordered them to leave the country within 24 hours after summoning Iran’s charge d’affaires over continued attacks targeting Kuwaiti territory and civilian infrastructure.

The Foreign Ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad Suleiman al-Mashaan summoned Counselor Hamed Hamid Yaqoubi Far, the charge d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy in Kuwait, and delivered an official protest note.

Kuwait also informed Iran that it had decided to reduce the number of diplomatic personnel at the Iranian Embassy.

Kuwait protests attacks on civilian sites

The ministry said the measures were taken in response to continued ballistic missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran.

It said the attacks included strikes carried out in the early hours of Wednesday and targeted several civilian facilities and vital installations in Kuwait, including Kuwait International Airport.

The ministry said the incidents killed one person and injured dozens of civilians.

It added that the attacks caused material damage to critical infrastructure and diplomatic premises.

Kuwait described the attacks as a flagrant violation of its sovereignty, territorial integrity, the U.N. Charter, principles of international law and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2817.

Kuwait rejects Iranian claims

Mashaan strongly condemned what he described as brutal and unjustified attacks against Kuwait.

He said Kuwait rejects any attempt to use its territory or airspace for hostile acts against any country.

He also rejected what he called unfounded Iranian allegations used to justify the attacks.

The deputy foreign minister said repeated claims without evidence cannot justify military actions targeting Kuwaiti territory, civilian facilities or strategic infrastructure.

He affirmed Kuwait’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and national security.

Kuwait also stressed its right under international law to take all necessary measures to defend its territory, airspace, citizens and residents.

The ministry said Kuwait remains determined to confront any actions threatening the country’s security, stability and territorial integrity while acting in line with international law and its obligations under the U.N. Charter.
