Lebanon will seek an extension of its ceasefire with Israel and a halt to home demolitions in southern villages during ambassador-level talks in Washington on Thursday, a senior Lebanese official told Anadolu.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meeting scheduled for Thursday evening will follow a preparatory session held last week.

According to the official, Lebanon will request both an extension of the ceasefire and an end to the demolition of homes and bulldozing of houses in occupied villages.

“Lebanon will request during the meeting an extension of the ceasefire and a halt to the demolition of homes and the bulldozing of houses in occupied villages,” the source said.

Talks aimed at peace agreement

The talks in Washington, which will be held at the ambassadorial level, aim to reach a peace agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

The latest meeting comes as the current 10-day ceasefire, announced by the U.S. on April 16, is due to expire on Sunday.

According to the report, the ceasefire has been violated daily by Israel.

The truce was announced after months of escalation along the Lebanon-Israel front.

Expanded Israeli attacks on Lebanon since March 2 have killed more than 2,200 people and displaced more than 1 million, according to the report.

The escalation began soon after the start of the Iran war.
